Isang selyadong berdeng kahon, ang BIR Box, ang naging sentro ng atensyon sa impeachment trial ni Vice President Sara Duterte. Ngunit higit pa rito, ang tunay na nagpakasentro ng usapin ay ang mga dokumentong maaaring makaapekto sa pagdinig ng kaso.
Sa loob ng kahon ay ang Income Tax Returns (ITRs) nina VP Sara at kanyang asawang si Manases “Mans” Carpio, kasama ang iba pang kaugnay na tax records.
Isinumite ito ng Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) bilang pagsunod sa subpoena na inilabas ng impeachment court sa pre-trial proceedings noong ika-6 ng Hunyo, 2026.
Sa ilalim ng Section 270 ng National Internal Revenue Code (NIRC), mahigpit na pinangangalagaan ang pagiging kumpidensiyal ng impormasyong hawak ng BIR. Nakasaad dito na:
"It shall be unlawful for any officer or employee of the Bureau of Internal Revenue to divulge or make known in an manner to any person the business, income, or estate of any taxpayer…”
Dahil dito, nanatiling selyado ang mga dokumento nang isumite sa impeachment court upang mapangalagaan ang kanilang pagiging kumpidensiyal. Ibig sabihin, hindi maaaring buksan o suriin ang laman ng kahon sa sariling pagpapasya ng sinuman.
Ayon kay Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson, "The decision on the status of the sealed BIR ITR records will be dictated by law and existing jurisprudence. The Impeachment Court will not and cannot be above the law. No one else is.”
Mahalaga ang mga tax records dahil maaari silang magsilbing dokumentaryong ebidensya upang patunayan o salungatin ang ilang usaping may kaugnayan sa pananalapi na nakasaad sa Articles of Impeachment, partikular na sa mga butas ng Statement of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth (SALN) ng bise presidente.
Gayunman, hindi nangangahulugang awtomatikong pinatutunayan ng mga dokumentong ito ang alinmang alegasyon. Kaya ang magiging halaga ng BIR box ay nakasalalay sa kung ano ang mapatutunayan ng mga dokumentong nasa loob nito sa kabuuan ng paglilitis.
